An improved AJHP

This issue of AJHP is the debut of several notable changes suggested to us through surveys of our readers. Starting with this issue we will be giving more emphasis to clinical content and practical content, changing the cover to enhance its utility, adding medical illustrations, increasing the use of flow diagrams, enhancing the readability of tables, and expanding the online features of AJHP.

Enhancements to AJHP’s clinical content include the following, which will appear regularly:

Added practical content will be generated through ASHP’s Sections and Forums. For example, content originating with members of the ASHP Section of Pharmacy Practice Managers will be published in the Management Consultation column; ideas emanating from the Section of Inpatient Care Practitioners will appear in our Frontline Pharmacist column. Comparable practical content will continue to be provided through members of the New Practitioners Forum and the Section of Home, Ambulatory, and Chronic Care Practitioners.

On the new AJHP cover we have added brief nomenclature to allow quick identification of each article’s scope. Clinical articles will be identified by disease state; and practice innovations, research, and opinions will be identified with subheadings, such as leadership, patient safety, and drug distribution. Further, we have added a tag line to differentiate AJHP from other pharmacy periodicals that publish clinical articles: "Encompassing the full scope of pharmacy practice in hospitals and health systems." This addition parallels a recommendation presented at this year’s ASHP House of Delegates meeting: "To advocate a high level of coordination of all components of the pharmacy enterprise in hospitals and health systems for the purpose of optimizing the value of drug therapy and medication-use safety . . ."

The addition of medical illustrations is intended to facilitate understanding of an article’s content and to add a touch of elegance to articles that our authors work so hard to create. AJHP editors will connect authors with certified medical illustrators who specialize in enhancing and interpreting the content of scientific publications. Likewise, we will assist authors in creating flow diagrams to summarize some elements of their articles.

Other recent enhancements to AJHP made in its online component, in addition to those added last year,2 complement the print version: (1) early release of the most important and timely papers, (2) Web-extended publication that allows fully searchable and retrievable content of infinite capacity,3 (3) efficient searching of full text that simplifies and enhances the ability of readers to find articles without resorting to a more limited print index, and (4) expanded exposure of content through AJHP’s new electronic reprint distribution capacity. (Many more readers see Internet-distributed reprints than the traditionally distributed paper copies.)

AJHP has long been the initial venue and repository of research, descriptive reports, and opinions that have profoundly influenced the advancement of pharmacy. The recent addition of more clinical and practical content will not diminish that role. AJHP will strive to maintain its long-standing status as the premier peer-reviewed periodical focused on the practice of pharmacy in hospitals and health systems.
